Cheesefarm Berkhout – Dutch Cheese from the Farm

In 1974 our mother started making cheese at their small farm in De Weere, a small village in the North of Holland. This wasn’t out of luxury! With 5 young children the extra money was very welcome. Pretty soon our parents were selling at various cheesemarkets and to some traders. The whole family helped with the farm and the cheese.

In 1994 the family got the opportunity to be part of a large landparticipation project in North Holland. They were able to build a complete new farm and have all their land close to the farm. So it happened, they moved to where the farm still is today; Gouwe, in between Hoogwoud and De Weere. They built a new farm, with more space to make cheese and opportunities to grow! In the beginning of 2000 the sons Nico and Ted took over the company. Nico takes care of the cows and the fields, Ted focusses on the cheese.

With their effort the request for cheese kept growing and the cheese factory in the cowshed soon became too small. In 2018 we built a new cheese factory that complies with FSSC 22000. Nowadays you can find our cheese at Schiphol Airport, in many touristshops in Amsterdam, specialty stores and various markets. And ofcourse in our shop on the farm!

You are more than welcome!
